GETTING OLD

Everyone is alive

And as energetic as a spring chicken

Until they’re not

Because they’re dead

Everyone is walking and doing

Yoga for the Rest of Us

And talking about diet and exercise

Until they’re not

And then the silence is deafening

Everyone turns up in movies

Looking white-haired and sunburned

Until you check imdb.com and learn

That they’ve been gone for anything up to ten years

And then they’re just a footnote

Everyone is still alive

And looking marvelous for their age

Until they’re not

And then you find you’re suddenly by yourself

Until you’re not (presumably)

Because (I suppose)

You’re dead yourself
